Welcome to the Rogers Music Academy

My accelerated piano lesson program, intended for students aged 6-adults, brings creativity, fun, and success back into piano lessons. Students leave their very first lesson with a new song to play, and you’ll hear your child playing new music each week with professional backing tracks. Piano lessons don’t need to be stuffy or repetitive - we teach the fundamentals of music while also bring joy to our students’ lives.

What Are Piano Lessons Like at Rogers Music Academy?

Above-Average Learning Velocity

One of our goals is to remove the tedium from piano lessons, and we do that in part by working through lesson books at a rapid pace. We never skip concepts, rush through challenging pieces, or leave slower students behind, but we have developed a unique way to bring piano students along more quickly than traditional lesson formats. You and you will love the progress being made, and this, in turn, can inspire a lifelong relationship with their instrument.

Lessons Filled With Music, Not Drills

Your Children will come home after their very first lesson with tunes they can share, and we continue to introduce students to new songs every single week. We will teach important musical concepts with music, not simply with facts, excessive drills, and classroom-style lecturing.

Piano Lessons in Gastonia With a Focus On Creativity

You might be familiar with keyboard instruction that encourages students to be dutiful robots. Many times, we are taught to only play music on the page, follow instructions carefully, and never think outside the box. Our piano lessons encourage students to pursue what they love about the piano, and they will be encouraged to improvise, write their own tunes, and interpret music in their own way (loud, soft, major, minor, etc.) - it’s a great way for them to learn and have fun at the same time.

Specific Musical Concepts Your Child Will Learn

Students at the Rogers Academy of Music grow into complete, well-rounded musicians, and here are just a few of the things the young pianist in your family will learn:

Reading Musical Notation Fluently

The ability to sight read is a huge benefit for the modern musician, and your child will start learning how to play tunes by sight with both hands as soon as possible. We will study notes on the piano keys, where those notes are found on the staff (in bass and treble clefs), and practice identifying them quickly and fluently.

The Basics of Music Theory

It’s important for students to learn how music works, and we will start working on theory early in your child’s musical journey. Students learn key signatures, the differences between major and minor keys, intervals, form, and more. They will then apply this knowledge to the songs they are practicing.

How To Use Correct Technique at the Piano

Our goal is for your child to enjoy the piano for a lifetime, but playing the piano incorrectly for many years can lead to injuries or wrist pain. We will teach your child or teen how to use proper hand position, how to address the piano with good posture, how to move fluidly without tension, and more.

How To Play By Ear

Reading music is important, but playing by ear is equally necessary. We will work on hearing a tune, replicating it, and adding an accompaniment as well. Furthermore, this ability (paired with music theory knowledge), will facility your child’s ability to compose and write songs.

Is the Goal of Lessons to Become a Professional or Advanced Classical Pianist?

Not necessarily - We want to help your family achieve your specific goals in music. Many of our piano students continue playing for years (or for a lifetime), and they simply enjoy the piano as a hobby, social activity, or tool in the community or a ministry.

Still other students do pursue a higher level of pianistic study at the university or conservatory level. Our piano classes teach the basics of music, piano fundamentals, and scale with your child’s ability, so your child won’t be limited if they have higher aspirations.

Students with an interest in jazz, rock, or pop will find the same to be true. They will learn musical information and skills that will apply to their favorite genre, so after they get the basics under their belt, they can merge into genre-specific music lessons with me or another piano teacher.

If we can answer any questions about our keyboard lessons or curriculum, please let us know.
